"Palooza" is an informal term used to describe a large, energetic, and vibrant event or celebration. It suggests a festival-like atmosphere with a lot of excitement, activities, and entertainment, often with
multiple elements or themes involved.
ROBOPALOOZA is a fun, festival-like annual gathering with space robotics as the central theme, combined with a lively atmosphere of live rock & roll.
It features the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Telepresence Robot Competition and Robotic Demonstrations from leading companies and universities in the Space Exploration domain.

Helelani (or “Heavenly Travels”) is a 700-pound planetary rover equipped with a suite of instruments and imaging systems that can be controlled remotely. The rover’s open payload design offers a mobile testing platform for planetary surface systems. Space agencies anywhere in the world can pilot Helelani tele-robotically through the rugged terrain of planetary analog test sites. robot technology

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) sponsoried a Telepresence Competition (https://ieee-telepresence.org/competition/ ) which required the competing teams to remotely operate the PISCES Helelani Robotic Rover through an obstacle field course in the Mojave Desert and then up the steep slope of Peterman Hill. At the top of the hill, the rover had to "Capture a Flag" and bring it back down the hill to the finish line. The fastest timed run won the competition. Each team had 30 minutes to complete the competition course.
Following the competition, the results were announced at the 2024 IEEE Conference on Telepresence Banquet

Al Nielsen was the owner and visionary behind the mad world of Cafe 247 and an inspirational maverick / artist / hot rodder / surfer and community stalwart.
He is pictured (on the right) with Billy Gibbons of legendary rock band ZZ Top (on the left) when Billy visited him at Cafe 247 in Lucerne Valley, Mojave Desert, California
His spirit left this planet in 2023 to travel among the stars in search of adventure and Robopalooza honors his memory and thanks Al, his family and the entire Lucerne Valley community for embracing some crazy space roboticists that showed up one day in the Mojave Desert with a vision of having a space robotics festival inspired by Burning Man, Mad Max and the Apollo lunar missions!
We are all about Telepresence!
